        In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.Chris Gorak (art direction in: Fight Club, Minority Report, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this alien invasion movie with a twist. Based on the story written by Leslie Bohem this movie in many ways succeeded and in many ways failed. For the most part the movie is believable and true to how things would actually happen. But then there are moments that set you back and dislike the film.

It begins with two friends, Ben and Sean, are on a business trip to Moscow. When the "business" part of the trip doesnt go so well they hit the local bars and party their asses off. They meet two other american girls, Anne and Natalie, to join them in their drunken adventures through the Russian nightclub scene. But in a quick instance all power to the city shuts off. In confusion the mass of bar-go'ers march out into the streets to investigate. What the find is circular rays of light falling from the sky. When one of these lights gets really close an officer of the law decides to investigate. The officer puts out his nightstick to touch the light. But when he does, he is violently reduced to ash. In a ash covered frenzy, with people disintegrating left and right, everyone runs off in their own direction. Our 5 protagonists make it to an unusually well armored, food storage are, for the bar they were just in. They wait in that storage room for 5 days with only the sound of the invasion to drown out their crying. Once they emerge they must fight back against the invisible invaders and attempt to make it back home.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" took the top spot at the box office once again this weekend, earning an estimated $47 million. The film's domestic sum now stands at an estimated $261 million, according to the Associated Press. That total makes the Michael Bay movie the highest grossing film domestically of 2011.
The movie, starring Shia LaBeouf, and Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, knocked "The Hangover Part II" from the top domestic spot for the year. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," whose combined domestic and international box office totals $1.02 billion, is the top film of 2011 worldwide with "Transformers" in a close second with over $600 million.
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" depicts a fictional account of what happens when it is revealed that a Apollo 11 moon landing mission in 1969 had found a wrecked alien robot spacecraft with no survivors during a secret mission on the dark side of the moon, confirming that mankind is not alone in the universe.
The two new releases for the weekend, "Horrible Bosses" and "The Zookeeper," came in a distant second and third for their box office debuts.
"Horrible Bosses" was the runner-up for the weekend with $28.1 million. The movie stars Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day as disgruntled workers who plot to murder their bosses, portrayed by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell.
Kevin James' comedy "The Zookeeper" came in third place with a box office haul of $21 million. The film, which also stars Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb, reportedly cost $80 million to make, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Pixar animated film "Cars 2" dropped to fourth place for the weekend. The family friendly movie took in 15.2 million, which raises its three-week total to $148.8 million.
"Bad Teacher," with Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel came in fifth place with $9 million, raising its box office sum to $78.8 million.

Horrible Bosses does an excellent job in setting itself up quickly. The players are introduced and the titular bosses are indeed "horrible". You can understand why any employee would have no problem seeing them meet an untimely end. However, once the cards are dealt this film doesn't have the bite needed to turn this movie into anything more than a foul-mouthed 93 minutes that's not exactly a waste of time, but I wouldn't consider it time well spent.

In the opening ten minutes or so, each of the film's lead characters introduces us to their boss, establishing just what exactly makes them so horrible. Nick (Jason Bateman) is in line for a promotion only to find out his boss (Kevin Spacey) has sabotaged his opportunity. Nick dubs him a "Total F–king Asshole" as big bold letters blot the screen to match his description. The same thing happens when Kurt's (Jason Sudeikis) boss (played for a few seconds by Donald Sutherland) dies of a heart attack and his son (Colin Farrell) takes over. Kurt describes him as his father's "Dipshit Cokehead Son." An apt name to be certain.

Of the three lead characters, the more interesting of the bunch is probably Dale (played by "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star Charlie Day) who is working as a dental assistant and also happens to be a registered sex offender for reasons I won't spoil here. Dale's boss (Jennifer Aniston) is something of a nymphomaniac, determined to have sex with him despite the fact he's already engaged. Dale considers her to be an "Evil Crazy Bitch."

Over drinks one night, this trio theorize on the possibility of killing their bosses in an effort to secure their sanity and overall happiness. As the plan comes together, thanks to some questionable advice from a cocktail sipping ex-con (Jamie Foxx), the story is set to take off. But it doesn't… at least not entirely.

Once Nick, Kurt and Dale begin carrying out their murderous plot the film tends to trip and stumble over itself just as much as the three leads when it comes to executing their plan. There are a few funny moments such as a hidden cat jump scare, a dropped box of cocaine and a stakeout sing-a-long, but overall the laughs aren't very consistent and the film is never as dark as it really should be.

In Lillian, Ohio in 1979, 13 year old Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney) is passing the summer holidays by helping his best friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) make a short film about Zombies. Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning) borrows her father's car and drives Joe, Charles and the rest of the gang, including Cary (Ryan Lee), a pyromaniac, and Ryan (Gabriel Basso), the leading man, to an old train depot to shoot a key scene for the film. Joe is in charge of make-up and sound, while Alice has been recruited to play the female lead. Utilising an on-coming train as 'production value' they start to shoot the scene, but Joe is distracted as he witnesses a truck drive onto the tracks towards the oncoming train, causing an explosive derailment. The kids barely survive and approach the truck to find their biology teacher (somehow alive) behind the wheel. He instructs them to leave immediately and to never tell anyone what they have witnessed.


Joe and his father, Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler) have been forced through circumstance to mend their distant relationship. Joe's mother was crushed to death in an industrial accident, called into work because Alice's father Louis (Ron Eldard), an alcoholic, called in sick. Unable to forgive Louis for his indirect involvement, tensions exists between the families. Following the train derailment, the military, led by the no-nonsense commanding officer, Colonel Nelec (Noah Emmerich), secure the crash site and fearing the repercussions of the lost cargo, attempt to make sense of the Super 8 film box left at the site. The children's desire to forget what they saw becomes impossible when a number of strange phenomena around town indicate that a creature is on the loose, made even more desperate when Alice is abducted. With no alternative but to bring in the 'big guns' the military decide to evacuate the entire town to a nearby Air Force base.

The films final third, following this evacuation, is disappointing. It begins to rely on jump-scares and quick flashes of the monster to create suspense. There were decisions that made no sense, justifications that served little explanation to the motives and activities of the monster and light flares that had no business. For a man whose monster in Lost was a giant puff of smoke (well, it may have become something more meaningful in the latter seasons), this really proved that J.J Abrams has few ideas on what to do with monsters.

With the delayed revelation of the antagonist resembling Jaws, the Cloverfield-like multi-legged creature escapes its transportation (in much the same way as the Dinosaurs escaped their enclosures in Jurassic Park) and has free reign over the town of Lillian. A number of strange occurrences; the disappearance of dogs all over town, the theft of appliances, and several human disappearances, send the town into a frenzy with no one to turn to but the Deputy Sheriff, like in...Jaws. Okay, so this does borrow from a bunch of films.

The kids all work great as a unit, and this is one of the best films centred almost exclusively on kids since Rob Reiner's Stand By Me. The written dialogue is believable (and funny), each of the kids have a unique and relevant personality and their chemistry feels completely natural. The strongest bond, of course, is between Joe and Alice, with Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning giving the standout performances (though I thought Riley Griffith was great too). Their love-story is genuinely warming, and the pair are really natural in presenting that first crush awkwardness. It remains resonant throughout the film, easily overshadowing the estranged father/son relationship that is ludicrously healed in the all-too-neat ending.
