“Insidious” marks a return to the big screen for director James Wan, who debuted in 2004 with the original “Saw” (yep, he’s the one to blame), only to see that success wither away after two follow-up stinkers in the form of 2007’s “Dead Silence” and “Death Sentence.”

Making his way back to low-budget spooktaculars, Wan actually makes an appealing ruckus with “Insidious,” a derivative but effective scare machine pulled off with a certain gusto, making the viewing experience a treat for those who enjoy their shock jump cinema.

Parents of three young children, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) have elected for a fresh start in a new house. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for matters to sour, with the oldest boy, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), knocked into a coma-like state, befuddling doctors and horrifying his parents. When strange occurrences and visitations start to plague the property, Renai calls for a move, only to find the same situation haunting their new place.

Frazzled and desperate, a call is made to Elise (Lin Shaye), a spirit investigator working with two nerdly techies (Angus Sampson and screenwriter Leigh Whannell). When the kindly grandmother-type identifies a wickedly demonic problem in the home, it’s up to Josh and Renai to confront the reality of their situation, requiring a substantial leap of faith.

A cross between “Poltergeist” and “Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious” isn’t a classically minded horror picture. It’s a blunt scare show built to unnerve, permitting Wan ample opportunity to stage frightful encounters with a screeching cat-walking-on-instruments score, building unbearable tension. He’s not blessed with the big bucks for this round, with the picture modestly designed, keeping to the innards of the two homes to capture Josh and Renai’s escalating nightmare.

However, the limited scope works agreeably for Wan, who makes an amusing effort to feel around the corners of the frame, keeping demons and ghosts barely in view to increase the tension, developing Renai’s assumed psychosis through flashes of gnarled spirits and their bloody traces of existence.

“Sucker Punch” tells the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is committed to a insane asylum under false circumstances brought up by her evil stepfather. He attempted to molest her & when she resisted, he went after her younger sister. She got a gun & while aiming at him, accidentally shot her sister instead & killed her. The stepfather claimed that she lost her mind upon the death of her mother a few days earlier. As she is being processed at the asylum, she overhears a deal being struck between her stepfather & the head of the asylum. She is to be lobotomized in 5 days. Making it easier for her stepfather to get access to her late mothers fortune. So far…so good. when the film is taking place is never stated but it seems to be in the 40′s/50′s no later than that so lobotomies were performed with a steel needle & a hammer nailed into your brain through your eyesocket. Not too cool. So she needs to escape , but how?

And the mysterious fifth part of the puzzle to go along with the map, fire, knife & Key? Let’s just say that I figured it out at the halfway point of the movie & you should too. It’s fairly obvious that Snyder (who wrote the script with Steve Shibuya) was going for a “Female Empowerment” kind of message here, but it’s so heavy handed & obvious that it ends up feeling trite & warmed over from the 70′s. Scott Glenn gets the worst of it. Appearing at the beginning of every mission he always has some words of wisdom to impart to the girls before they embark on their quest. His words are snarky, corny & even he sounds like he doesn’t believe it in his recital of them. I almost thought I saw him smirk at one point during a serious scene…almost.

As he begins seventh grade, Greg and his older brother - and chief tormentor - Rodrick must deal with their parents' misguided attempts to have them bond.

The best thing I can say about this 2nd edition of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book series - a series that I really enjoy by the way - is that it’s not as bad as the first, which was a mean-spirited, disgusting, jaw-droppingly unfunny movie. However, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules” is still pretty bad.


The first film, which came-out only last March, focused on “wimpy kid” Greg Heffley’s ups and downs - mostly downs - as a 6th grader. This time the story deals with Greg’s life at home, primarily his relationship with his older brother Rodrick.


Rodrick constantly picks on Greg and hates having him around. But their parents, over-played again by Rachel Harris and Steve Zahn, want them to get along. So they come-up with ways to try to force Greg and Rodrick to become closer. And it works - sort of - as Rodrick teaches Greg how to lie to his parents and break family rules. And each has a goal: Rodrick to have his band win the local talent contest and Greg to get noticed by the new girl in school. Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.


Early in “Rodrick Rules” I was thinking: “Here we go again”, after a few gross and ugly scenes that could have been right out of the first film. But thankfully the script this time stays mostly out of school. This doesn’t make the movie  entertaining by any means, but at least it’s watchable.


There are a few specific things that make this sequel better than the original. This version contains more of the pencil drawing of the characters that make the books so much fun. And the parents are much more involved in this story. However, that’s both good and bad, as the mom and dad are portrayed as dumb and out of touch. In fact, watching the film I felt bad for both Zahn and Harris, who I hope at least got some decent paychecks.


There are a lot of awkward and very unfunny scenes, and the overall message about the importance of brotherhood is lost, thanks to the over-the-top performances and predictable script. It’s clear that the producers of “Rodrick Rules” tried to make a better film that the original, so I give them credit for that. But the final product is still pretty much of a mess.


It’s rated PG, for some of the gross humor. It’s appropriate for kids seven and up. The 10 and under crowd will probably enjoy it, but for older kids and adults, and fans of the books, this is a painful experience.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan says his upcoming sci-fi superhero film "RA.One" is an attempt to create something that will change the genre of Indian films.


"It's an indigenously made film and it's made in VFX studios in India and is trying to create something which will change the genre of films. If Indian filmmakers would like to make something alike, they have the access to the technology," King Khan told reporters at FICCI-Frames Friday.


He also said that the film would be his first step in paying back to the audiences the love and honour he has received in the last 20 years of his career.


"I have made one promise to every one in India. I have been working for 20 years and I have been given too much; much more than I deserve as an actor, as a star, and I think it's time to give back some," the superstar said.


"RA.One" is scheduled to release at Diwali time but the star has already started its marketing so that the superhero character sinks into the psyche of his audience.


"I just thought that we don't have any background of a superhero in terms of comics like 'Spiderman'. We have superheroes like 'Krrish' and 'Drona' but they are film superheroes.


"I tell people this is the one who's gonna do... he is going to fly, he has these powers and once this becomes known, then people would like to come and see the film... I just thought to market a year before, hope it pays off," Shah Rukh said.

 It is action movie which amazed every moment the who are fond of action .The marines jump right into the fray within the first 15 minutes or so and the action continues to pour in throughout most of the movie. Firefights, marine maneuvers, communication and motions, and actual strategies are incorporated into this movie, which was the director's goal in this project. Yes, there are some obvious solutions to the problem, aka nuke the zone, but then that wouldn't be a really long movie would it? Continuing on, another key factor that is seen is the brotherhood that soldiers have between their own platoon and the friendships that they make. Combine that with the action and you get the suspense that makes you connect with the characters hoping each one survives. Heck you may even pick a favorite character to root for in hopes they survive. Another strong point is that the movie keeps going, with very little slow scenes in the mix, so again action lovers will love it. Yes it kind of causes the story line to be narrowed out, but again you shouldn't expect a story from this kind of movie.

Hall Pass is definitely a duder comedy. There’s nothing romantic about the film, and it appears to have a heavy dose of The Hangover laced over its framework. That being said, while some of the random moments are hilarious, the majority of the film leaves you sitting there thinking about how awful the characters are. As the film winds towards its eventual conclusion, you’d rather see all these couples torn apart irreparably than stomach the thought of them getting back together and being happier than they are.
In the film, two suburbanite douches (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) have been given hall passes by their wives. Their wives are fucking morons, and they pretty much give them the hall passes because they think a week off to sow their wild oats will bring them closer together because nothing brings a couple together like infidelity and STD’s. The dudes, being unconscionable and somewhat moronic, high five each other and then go out looking for babes. Unfortunately, their middle class ways and penchant for hitting on chicks that are either out of their league or way too young for them leads to a bevy of comedic scenes which are hit and miss for the most part.

A nice genre blend between Teen Romance and Coming-of-Age, this movie delivers deep insights into normal behavior and how catastrophic life changes when you realize you’re the bad guy and you’re FORCED to grow up.



Beastly, on the other hand, I thought was quite good.  Alex Pettyfer plays Kyle, a teenage New York Socialite brat who treats everyone who isn't rich and beautiful like crap.  He's a jerk, a bully, and ass all rolled up into one, but we do see glimpses of someone with a good heart underneath, but he's been taught by his selfish jerk of a father to be an even bigger selfish jerk.  Of course Lindy, played by Vanessa Hudgens, has a crush on him, even though he barely acknowledges her existence.  


Along comes Kendra, played amazingly well by Mary-Kate Olsen, an extremely well-dressed witch, who happens to be his favorite target to torment, and soon she has enough and places a curse on him that turns him as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside, a tattooed and pierced freak, complete with some truly horrible scars.  (The previews and poster - like the one above - actually made the tattoos and scars kind of sexy, but I was quite glad to see that in the actual movie they were pretty awful - open flesh wounds are rarely sexy and I was glad they didn't try to make them so).  One of the tattoos is alive, a flowering rose tree, and the curse specifies that he must find someone to see beyond the exterior and say they love him before one year has passed and the flowers in the tattoo bloom again.  His loving, kind, and caring father (not), played by Peter Krause, immediately ships his son off to a crappy house in Brooklyn where no one will see him, and refuses to ever visit or spend time with his son, instead sending a maid, Zola, to care for him and a blind tutor, Will, (played flawlessly by Neil Patrick Harris) so he doesn't fall behind in school.

“ I was invited today to see an Advance Screening of this movie by a a friend and was excited to find out it was this movie. I had seen the preview during the commercial break from one of my TV shows that I follow and it seemed promising.

In a movie world today where everything released just seems to be sequel after sequel and remake after remake, I found this movie original and thought provoking. With a combination of elements that included thriller and science fiction themes, and then adding in a spiritual and romance side of things as well, this movie had it all.

I thought Matt Damon was excellent in his role and I was captivated for the whole movie in its concept it was drawing onto between fate and free will.

It is my hope many people will show up to see this movie. I loved it and know that I will definitely buy it when it’s released on DVD in the future.

Oh and the theater I saw it in had a couple of hundred people watching it and they erupted into applause at the end. How often does that happen these days at the end of movies? Hopefully that tells you how great this movie was!

For decades, the people of the village of Daggerhorn have maintained an uneasy truce with the werewolf, who prowls at every full moon, by offering the beast a monthly animal sacrifice to quench its appetite. But under a blood red moon, the wolf changes the stakes by taking the life of one of their own.

The victim is the older sister of Valerie, a beautiful, young woman, who has just found out that her parents have arranged for her to marry Henry, the scion of the town's wealthiest family. But Valerie wants only Peter, the poor woodcutter she has loved all her life. Unwilling to be parted, the couple was planning to run away together, but, in a horrifying instant, the wolf changes everything.


As the townspeople hunger for revenge, famed werewolf hunter Father Solomon is summoned to Daggerhorn to kill the beast once and for all. But Solomon's arrival brings only more turmoil as he warns everyone that the werewolf takes human form by day and could be any one of them. No one is above suspicion. Panic grips the town as the death toll rises with each red moon, tearing apart the once close-knit village. But it is Valerie who discovers she has a unique connection to the wolf that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect... and bait.

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town -- a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy and Clive Gollings. Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Landing in our planet’s theaters this weekend is Paul, a not so out-of-this-world comedy from British collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Co-starring as nerdy fanboy buddies on their own star trek, they’ve also written the script but given themselves not much to work with, instead saving the best laughs for the titular extraterrestrial and the supporting characters.
Seth Rogan would seem like an appropriate casting choice for the CGI slacker alien, but I found his voice to be a mismatch several times throughout Paul. This problem was magnified by facial animation that was slightly off enough times to be a distraction, but eventually Paul the character will win you over with his persona.
While I found Paul the movie to be pedestrian overall and most of the comedy hot-or-miss, I still enjoyed it, mainly due to an all-star comedic cast that includes Bill Hader and Jane Lynch. Kristin Wiig shines as she often does in her roles, but Jason Bateman wastes his, a disappointment because he’s done so well in the past with director Greg Mottola in episodes of Arrested Development (the Bluth is out there!) and can excel in antagonistic parts (The Ex).
It’s a welcome sight to get Pegg and Frost returning to their film roots of expertly spoofing movie genres (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), but Paul is most rewarding for sci-fi fanatics.

The Lincoln Lawyer is a very well done addition to the legal cinema with a cast that fills its roles out to a "T". See also Chuck and Bones. I would really recommend renting the Al Pacino classic And Justice For All and see the very great similarities and key differences in both of these films..
