Two families come together for the union of their children. One family is a wealthy uptown clan, while the other is blue-collar downtown. Sabrina (Paula Patton) and Jason (Laz Alonso) are getting married in Martha's Vineyard, much to the chagrin of Jason's mother. When Jason's family arrives at the Watson's mansion, there is an undeniable culture difference. Two two families have nothing in common and have no problems expressing it.
The clash between the two families cause trouble for the couple on their wedding weekend. But can they survive a weekend with their very different families? The film also stars Meagan Good,
Getting to Know Friends
The film celebrates African-American culture, but doesn't highlight the differences. It is a great mix of both comedy and drama, while making light of some of the stereotypes that have been so misunderstood. The white wedding planner, played by Julie Bowen, for example, brings some lighthearted humor in trying to understand some of the cultural differences. It is also interesting to see two very different African-American families butting heads about tradition and what is necessary at a wedding.
Breaking the Barriers
It's the battle of the divas. Both Angela Basset and Loretta Devine give each other a run for each others money when it comes to who can play the bigger diva. I won't even attempt to choose a winner among these two, but let's just say, it's pretty close.
Devine does an amazing job playing a manipulative, money-snob who will do anything to protect her son, even if that means ruining his wedding. Basset has the rich-woman snob down to a tee and her refined look and elegant glamor make her even more believable in the role.
